When is the best time to paraglide in Almaty?
September for everything, April for a calm first flight. July is the strongest and least usable — Ushkonyr blows out on most summer afternoons, so summer flying happens before 11:00.
In detail
April and early May are the best months for a first flight: clean weak thermals, green steppe, cool air and the highest chance the flight actually happens.
June to August is the strong season and also the frustrating one. Almaty city is 35 °C and above in July, the air over the plateau goes off early, and by early afternoon it is often unflyable. Summer slots leave early and are back before lunch.
September is the month to come, and this applies to both tandem passengers and XC pilots. Stable air, clear visibility, still warm, fruit in the markets — and the European flying season is over, so choosing Almaty in September is not choosing it instead of the Alps.
First three weeks of October still work for tandem: short midday window, cold at height, the best light of the year on the range.
November to March there is no thermal season. Some local pilots fly dynamic and speedfly at the ski areas; we do not sell it. Month-by-month detail is on the season page.
